INDICATION

Switopride 50mg Tab is a prokinetic agent indicated for the symptomatic treatment of functional dyspepsia and gastroparesis, including symptoms such as postprandial fullness, upper abdominal bloating, early satiety, nausea, and epigastric discomfort caused by impaired gastric motility.

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Itopride is a combined dopamine D2 receptor antagonist and acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. D2 receptor blockade in the gastrointestinal tract enhances acetylcholine release from myenteric plexus neurons, while simultaneous acetylcholinesterase inhibition prevents the breakdown of released acetylcholine, amplifying its prokinetic effect. This dual mechanism stimulates gastric and intestinal smooth muscle contractions, accelerates gastric emptying, and improves gastroduodenal coordination. Unlike older prokinetics, itopride does not significantly cross the blood-brain barrier, minimizing central dopaminergic side effects such as extrapyramidal symptoms and prolactin elevation.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

•      Adults: 50mg three times daily before meals

•      Duration of treatment typically 4 to 8 weeks

•      Take 30 minutes before each main meal for optimal effect

SIDE EFFECTS

Common:

•      Diarrhoea or loose stools
